Fredrik Lüning

Partner, Attorney-at-law

Biography

With over 25 years of experience, Fredrik’s practice focuses on commercialization of IP and dispute resolution in IP-related conflicts. He is also a well-known lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Lund University.

Fredrik has wide-ranging experience of structuring, drafting, and negotiating IP-related agreements. He has drafted licensing and technology transfer contracts for multinational companies, entrepreneurial inventors, university researchers and everything in between. He has an equally deep experience of contracts concerning trademark licensing, distributorships, and various types of commercial collaboration such as partnership agreements and shareholders’ agreements. He has advised on how to develop and structure licensing and business schemes in business sectors that do not normally license as a way of doing business. On several occasions he has represented clients in negotiating and drafting research collaboration agreements such as for the EU research program Horizon 2020.

In his contentious practice, Fredrik has represented clients in patent infringement and invalidity proceedings in many technical fields. His experience includes both obtaining preliminary injunctions and defending against them. He has enforced and defended patents, trademarks, designs, and copyrights before courts in Sweden in a multitude of cases, and he has coordinated such matters in several foreign jurisdictions. He has also handled contractual disputes before Swedish courts and in arbitration proceedings. He has argued cases before European Courts of Justice on several occasions.

About Fredrik

Fredrik believes that IP comes with its own dynamic, be it commercial exploitation or contentious ventures. It is a success factor to understand this dynamic and make use of it with a strategic mindset. He strives to combine a deep understanding of IP law with a practical, hands-on approach. All efforts put in should match the commercial values at stake. He is sceptical of complicated solutions and knows from experience that they typically fail for one reason or the other.

Fredrik’s analytical ability and out-of-the-box thinking has made him a go-to-person for many colleagues in Sweden and abroad, who often appoint him to handle complex matters or seek his advice. Such matters tend to end up on his desk, whether he bids for it or not.

His capabilities and engaging personality have made him an appreciated lecturer for many years at the advanced course in IP Conflict Management at the Faculty of Law, Lund University.
